Fluids and capacities

Engine oil quantity, grade and pressure for the NA (Z22SE) and the gearbox fluid quantity, from the 2002 Vauxhall TIS, plus where to find the coolant, brake and clutch fluid figures that owners have given.

Torques & specs

NA engine oil, with filter5.5 litres (TIS)
NA engine oil, without filter5.0 litres (TIS)
NA engine oil qualityACEA A3/B3 (TIS)
Gearbox fluidApprox. 1.55 litres (2002 TIS)

The figures in the first two sections are from the 2002 Vauxhall TIS (Technical Information System). The last section lists figures that owners gave in other guides on this site, and links to the guide each one came from.

The TIS we have is from 2002, before the Turbo was made, so it has no Turbo figures. It covers the NA only, and we have the engine oil page and one gearbox fluid entry from it.

Engine oil, NA (Z22SE)

Item2002 TIS figure
Fill capacity, with oil filter5.5 litres
Fill capacity, without oil filter5.0 litres
Between "min" and "max" on the dipstick1.0 litre
Oil qualityACEA A3/B3
Oil viscositySAE 0W-X, 5W-X or 10W-X, where X must be 30 or greater
Oil pumpRotor pump
Oil pressure, engine idling and at operating temperature150 kPa (1.5 bar, about 22 psi)
Oil consumption0.6 litres per 1,000 km
  • Viscosity: because X must be 30 or greater, 5W-30, 0W-40 and 10W-40 all fit the list. 15W-40, which some owners have used, isn't on it.
  • Oil pressure: the TIS page lists the oil pump twice, with 150 kPa both times, and both footnotes say "with the engine idling and at operating temperature".
  • Oil consumption: the table gives 0.6 litres per 1,000 km but doesn't say whether that is typical or a limit.
  • Disposal: the TIS says to observe the applicable national legislation when disposing of engine oil.

For checking the level, the filter and the owners' experience of how much goes in, see Engine oil and filter change. For the intervals, see the Service schedule.

Gearbox fluid

Item2002 TIS
QuantityApprox. 1.55 (litres; the pasted text shows no unit)
Catalogue no.19 40 768
Part no.09 120 541

Check the level, don't just pour in the quantity. The TIS says that after a transmission repair operation the transmission must be topped up to the lower edge of the level aperture. It also says that the fluid is filled by weight at the factory, so the fluid level is always below the checking aperture.

The page doesn't name the gearbox, but as the TIS is from 2002 it covers the NA. The 1.55 figure matches the NA guide. For the Turbo, owners report about 1.5 litres for the F23, with some taking more. See Gearbox oil replacement (NA) and F23 gearbox removal and clutch replacement (Turbo).

Other fluids, from owners' guides

These are not from the TIS. They are what owners gave in the threads behind each guide.

FluidWhat owners sayGuide
Coolant, NADisputed. Owners say 6 or 12 litres, and the system never drains completely.Coolant change and bleeding
Coolant, Turbo13.2 litres, from one owner.
Brake fluidAbout 2 litres for a full change. The guide's author used DOT 4.Brake fluid replacement
Clutch fluid (Turbo)About a quarter to half a litre to bleed. DOT 5.1 is suggested for a hard-driven car.F23 gearbox removal and clutch replacement
Help wanted
We don't have the Turbo's (Z20LET) oil or gearbox fluid figures, the gearbox fluid grade, or the TIS figures for coolant and brake fluid. If you have a later TIS or a Turbo handbook, please send the pages.
