Engine data: Turbo (Z20LET) adjustment figures, specifications and clearances (from TIS)

The factory figures for the 2.0 Turbo Z20LET from the Vauxhall TIS: idle and mixture test figures, oil and coolant fill, oil pressure, compression, plug gap, belt, bearing and piston clearances, and the engine details. The pages are headed Speedster, and the TIS disagrees with itself on idle speed and power, so those are flagged.

Torques & specs

Engine oil with filter / without filter4.25 litres / 4.0 litres
Between the dipstick marks1.0 litre
Oil quality and viscosityACEA A3/B3, SAE 0W-X, 5W-X or 10W-X (X must be 30 or more)
Oil pressure, hot at idle230 to 240 kPa
Spark plug gap0.9 to 1.1 mm
Compression1,100 to 1,400 kPa, not more than 25% loss between cylinders
Ignition order1-3-4-2
Fuel tank36 litres
These pages are headed "Speedster", with an Opel manufacturer code. The Speedster Turbo and the VX220 Turbo share the Z20LET engine, so the engine figures should apply, but check them against your own service data if you are setting something up. Where the TIS gives two different figures for the same thing we show both.

Idle and mixture test figures

ItemFigure
Idle speed, manual gearbox730 to 950 rpm (adjustment sheet). The technical data page says 700 to 900 rpm
Increased (fast) idle speed2,800 to 3,200 rpm
CO at increased idle0.3 % by volume
Lambda at increased idle0.97 to 1.03
Minimum engine temperature for the test80 °C
Conditioning timeAt least 30 seconds
Sensor typeStep (spring) sensor, not wide band
Minimum voltage increase of the sensor300 mV
Diagnostic socketCentre console

The idle range is wide, so anything inside 700 to 950 rpm covers both pages. If the idle hunts or sits outside this, there is a fault to find. The NA figures are on the NA adjustment data page, and they match the Turbo's on the adjustment sheet.

Engine details

  • Engine: Z 20 LET, 2.0 litre 16 valve turbo, 4 cylinders in line, 1,998 cc, bore 86 mm and stroke 86 mm. Compression ratio 8.8 : 1.
  • Output: the adjustment sheet says 147 kW at 5,500 rpm. The technical data page says 140 kW at 5,400 rpm and 250 Nm from 1,950 to 5,300 rpm. We don't know why they differ.
  • Engine management: Motronic ME 1.5.5 by Bosch, direct ignition, closed loop catalyst, EGR and knock control. Model years MY 2003 onwards. Euro 3 / D4 on the sheet (the technical page says Euro 4 / D4).
  • Fuel: 95 RON (85 MON) recommended, 91 RON (82.5 MON) as the alternative.
  • Max engine speed: 6,400 rpm.
  • Spark plugs: type FLR 8 LDCU, gap 0.9 to 1.1 mm. See spark plug replacement.
  • Valve play: 0 mm (the valves have hydraulic followers, so there is nothing to adjust).
  • Camshaft lift: 8.5 mm on both inlet and exhaust.

Oil, coolant and belts

ItemFigure
Engine oil, with filter4.25 litres
Engine oil, without filter4.0 litres
Between "min" and "max"1.0 litre
Oil qualityACEA A3/B3
Oil viscositySAE 0W-X, 5W-X or 10W-X, where X is 30 or more
Oil pumpDuocentric. Pressure 230 to 240 kPa with the engine idling at operating temperature
Oil consumption0.6 litre per 1,000 km (the page doesn't say whether that is typical or a limit)
Coolant fill, manual gearbox6.7 litres. 50% water and 50% anti-freeze
ThermostatBypass type, starts to open at 92 °C
Coolant pumpCentrifugal. 150 litres per minute at 6,000 rpm
Ribbed drive belt940 mm long, automatic tensioner
Timing (toothed) belt168 teeth, 24 mm wide, 8 mm pitch, automatic tensioner. The TIS says to record the belt change on the belt sticker

The 6.7 litre coolant figure is much lower than the 13.2 litres one owner quoted, and neither says whether it includes the charge cooler, the oil cooler or the heater. See fluids and capacities and coolant change and bleeding. For the oil change see engine oil and filter change.

Compression and cylinder head

  • Compression pressure: 1,100 to 1,400 kPa (11 to 14 bar), and the loss between cylinders must be no more than 25%.
  • Cylinder head height: 134 mm. The TIS says resurfacing the head is not permitted.
  • Valve seat width: inlet 1.0 to 1.4 mm, exhaust 1.4 to 1.8 mm. Seat angle 90°.
  • Valve stem play: inlet 0.030 to 0.057 mm, exhaust 0.040 to 0.067 mm.
  • Valve guide bore: 6.000 to 6.012 mm standard, 6.075 to 6.090 mm oversize.

Crankshaft, rods, pistons and rings

  • Crankshaft bearing play: 0.015 to 0.043 mm. End float 0.050 to 0.152 mm. Out of round no more than 0.03 mm.
  • Main bearing journal diameter (standard): 57.974 to 57.995 mm, in three colour grades (white, green, brown). There are 0.25 and 0.50 mm undersizes.
  • Con-rod bearing play: 0.006 to 0.031 mm. Journal diameter (standard) 48.970 to 48.988 mm, with 0.25 and 0.50 mm undersizes.
  • Cylinder bore (standard): 85.985 to 86.055 mm depending on the index (99, 00 or 05), and 0.5 mm oversize at 86.495 to 86.505 mm.
  • Piston diameter (standard): 85.942 to 86.018 mm depending on the index. Piston play 0.027 to 0.053 mm. Piston projection 0.4 mm.
  • Piston ring gaps: 0.30 to 0.50 mm on both compression rings. Vertical play 0.02 to 0.04 mm. Space the gaps 120° apart.
  • Gudgeon pin: floating in the con-rod. Play 0.007 to 0.022 mm in the piston and 0.014 to 0.025 mm in the con-rod.

The bearing shell colour codes and thicknesses are on the TIS page, and aren't reproduced here. If you are building the engine, use the manual for those and for the tightening sequences. The bolt torques are on the torque values page.

Other figures from the same pages

  • Fuel tank: 36 litres, with an activated carbon canister. The pump is in the tank (a Delphi type) and the fuel filter is a paper element in the line in the engine bay.
  • Battery: 12 V, 45 Ah.
  • Gearbox: F23, with the SRT version on the Turbo. Final drive 3.63 for the Turbo and 3.95 for the NA. Fluid fill approx. 1.55 litres. See F23 gearbox and clutch.
  • Clutch: single dry plate, lining 7.65 mm thick, 228 mm outside diameter and 150 mm inside diameter, the same on both engines. The hydraulic fluid is a DOT 4 brake fluid.
