The factory steps for adjusting front camber, front castor and rear camber with the shims, from the Vauxhall TIS.

Torques & specs

Steering arm to hub carrier bolts - 45 Nm.45 Nm
Bolts; swivel joint carrier to hub carrier - 45 Nm.45 Nm
Pivot bolts - 45 Nm.45 Nm
The steps below are shortened from the Vauxhall TIS pages for the Speedster. The VX220 shares the same engines and most of the car, but check anything unusual against your own car. The TIS pictures and the full wording aren't reproduced, so use the workshop manual if you are doing the job. We haven't seen owners' accounts of this job, so there are no owner tips here.

The figures to aim for, and what owners run, are in Wheel alignment (geometry) settings. This guide only gives the TIS steps for the adjustment itself.

Camber and castor are set with shims. Tighten everything to the torque listed if you disturb the wishbone bolts.

Camber, front

The TIS steps are the same for the Turbo and the NA.

Measure

  1. Camber angle (negative) is controlled by shims positioned between the steering arm and hub carrier. Shims are available in 1 mm and 3 mm thicknesses.
  2. Camber using optical alignment measuring equipment. For dimensions refer to “Technical Data”

Adjust

  1. Camber angle - to decrease negative camber towards zero, add shims. To increase negative camber away from zero, remove shims - 1 mm shim will alter camber by approximately 0.25°.
  2. Torque
  3. Steering arm to hub carrier bolts - 45 Nm.

Camber, rear wheels

The TIS steps are the same for the Turbo and the NA.

Measure

  1. Camber angle is controlled by shims positioned between the upper hub carrier and the upper swivel joint carrier. Shims are available in 1mm thickness.
  2. Rear wheel camber using optical alignment measuring equipment. For dimensions refer to “Technical Data”

Adjust

  1. To decrease negative camber angle (move towards zero), add shims. To increase negative camber, remove shims -1 mm shim will alter camber by approximately 0.3°.
  2. Torque
  3. Bolts; swivel joint carrier to hub carrier - 45 Nm.

Castor, front

The TIS steps are the same for the Turbo and the NA.

Measure

  1. Caster angle is controlled by shims positioned at pivots A and B. The shims allow the upper wishbone to be moved forwards or rearwards to change the caster angle. The total shim pack thickness of 4 x 1.5 mm at each pivot must not be changed. Distribution of shims at A and B must be the same. The position of the nitrile-faced washer must not be changed.
  2. Front leg of upper wishbone.
  3. Rear leg of upper wishbone.
  4. Caster with steering set in straight ahead position and using optical alignment measuring equipment. For dimensions refer to “Technical Data”

Adjust

  1. Caster angle - transfer of 1.5 mm shim from front to rear reduces caster by approximately 0.4°; transfer of 1.5 mm shim from rear to front increases caster by approximately 0.4°.
  2. Torque
  3. Pivot bolts - 45 Nm.
