Indicator flasher relay (K31): where it is, and fixing fast flashing with LED bulbs

The flasher unit (K31) is tucked up under the dash next to the bonnet release. Fitting LED indicator bulbs makes the indicators blink too fast, and owners said the fix is an LED-compatible flasher relay.

Applies to: VX220 and Speedster, NA, TurboDifficulty: Time: Mostly the time it takes to get into the footwell

Parts

  • LED-compatible flasher relay, or a CF13 GL02-type relay (One owner said the CF13 GL02 type works with LEDs or a mix of LEDs and bulbs, from 0.02 A to 20 A. We haven’t checked the pin layout against the VX220 plug. Check before you buy)

Tools

  • Torch
This is from one short thread in 2016. The answers are consistent, but they come from a few owners, and nobody posted a part number for an LED relay that fits the VX220 plug. Treat the relay suggestions as leads to check, not as a tested fix.

Where the flasher unit is

TIS lists the flasher unit as K31, in the passenger compartment, under the instrument panel. An owner asked where exactly. The answer was that it is right next to the bonnet release, so in the driver's footwell.

Getting to it takes effort: you have to get your head and shoulders into the footwell and look up. One owner said it is the one on the right hand side of the pair in the second photo, a Lucas part. The K31 entry is also on the relays and fuses page.

LED indicator bulbs flash too fast

The owner asking was fitting LED lights, and the indicators blinked far too fast. A standard flasher unit relies on the load of ordinary filament bulbs, and LED bulbs draw far less, so it flashes quickly (or flashes erratically). He asked if K31 was the unit controlling the flash rate. The reply was that it "almost certainly" is.

  • LED-specific flasher relays exist, and one owner linked to one. Check that the plug matches the VX220, because we don't have the pin layout.
  • CF13 GL02 type relay: another owner said that you can fit this when using only LEDs, or a mix of bulbs and LEDs, because it handles 0.02 A to 20 A. He said it works fine, but makes one or two extra clicks when you switch the indicator off. The lights do not blink during these clicks.
  • The owner who asked planned to try it and said he would look at the unit. The thread doesn't say how it turned out.
LEDs also raise legal and visibility questions, so see Bulb types and upgrades and rear light bulbs for what owners said about LED bulbs at the back.
Help wanted
We haven't seen the part number of the original flasher unit, the pin layout of the plug, or a confirmed LED relay that plugs straight in. A clearer photo of the unit with the cover trim removed would help too. If you have fitted one, please tell us which and how it worked.
